Abstract

Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) is a life-threatening condition characterized by acute and severe respiratory failure, commonly caused by pneumonia, sepsis, aspiration, and major trauma. Therefore, comprehensive assessment and nursing care are crucial for planning timely and appropriate management. Nursing assessment involves comprehensive history taking, continuous monitoring of vital signs, evaluation of lung status and oxygen saturation using pulse oximetry, arterial blood gas analysis, and determining the appropriate treatment plan.

The care of patients with ARDS requires collaboration among a multidisciplinary team, with nurses playing a key role. The primary goals of care are (1) optimizing oxygenation and ventilation, and (2) reducing the risk of complications. Nursing interventions include the provision of supplemental oxygen, care for patients receiving mechanical ventilation, careful fluid management, prone positioning, and the promotion of appropriate mobilization or rehabilitation. In addition, nurses must collaborate with the healthcare team to assess indications for appropriate pharmacological therapy, monitor for treatment-related complications, and continuously provide education to patients and their families regarding the disease, treatment approaches, and prevention of complications. These components are essential to the overall quality of care and contribute significantly to improved patient outcomes.
