Knowledge and factor associated with knowledge of schizophrenia among Caregivers of Patient with Schizophrenia in Kaewnonkham Namsook Primary Care Cluster, Kalasin province

Abstract

Introduction and objective: Schizophrenia is a common psychiatric disorder. The caregiver has an important role in taking care of schizophrenic patients result in decreasing psychotic symptoms and preventing relapse of the disease. However, the caregiver has insufficient knowledge about schizophrenia. This research aims to study the proportion and associated factor of caregivers of patients with schizophrenia in Kaewnonkham Namsook Primary care cluster with good knowledge about schizophrenia. 

Methods: The cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on caregivers of patients with schizophrenia living in the Kaewnonkham Namsook Primary care cluster. The self-administrator questionnaire, including demographic data and knowledge about schizophrenia was collected.

Result: This study included 89 caregivers of patients with schizophrenia into the study. The mean score of knowledge about schizophrenia of the participants was 4.52. About 33.7% of the participants had good knowledge about schizophrenia. The factor associated with knowledge about schizophrenia was age less than 60 years old (Adjusted OR = 3.968, 95%CI:1.167 – 13.488, p-value = 0.027).

Conclusion: Only one-third of the caregivers of patients with schizophrenia had good knowledge about schizophrenia. The factor associated with knowledge about schizophrenia was age less than 60 years old.
