Abstract

The present study was a randomized controlled trial whose objective was to study the

Effect of education and treatment using directory observed treatment (DOT) program through line application. The sample was 64 pulmonary tuberculosis patients who sought treatment at the outpatient examination room in a community hospital, Rayong  provinces. Block random assignment was used to assign the sample into the experimental group (N = 32) and the control group (N = 32). The control group received the regular nursing care and the handbook for pulmonary tuberculosis patient. The experimental group received the education and treatment using directory observed treatment (DOT) program through line application developed based on IMB model. There was a 6-week trial period. Data were analyzed by Independent t-test.

The results showed that the experimental group and the control group were male, 80.49  % and 68.8%, respectively. The experimental group had the average age of  41.93 years (SD = 9.87), and the control group, the average age of 42.13 years (SD = 12.65). The findings showed that at the 6th week,  medical adherence score increased as compared to the score at the 1st week (p<.05).  The results suggest that the 6-weeks the education and treatment using directory observed treatment (DOT) program through line application can be used to enhanced anti-tuberculosis medication adherence among patients with pulmonary tuberculosis.

Recommendations were that nurses use the  education and treatment using directory observed treatment (DOT) program through line application to provide disease knowledge, treatment, feedback and two-way communication to increase anti-tuberculosis medication adherence in pulmonary tuberculosis patients.
