Abstract

Asthma is a chronic, life-threatening disease that difficult to control. Health literacy is an important factor in asthmatics control, however has not been studied.

This study was a qualitative study surveyed in community context of Surat Thani province, where were many of asthma patients and had high mortality rates. The objective study was studying the experience of 9 asthma patients who were successful in asthma control. This study was underpinning the philosophy of Heidegger's phenomenology interpreting. Researchers provided the in-dept interview questionnaires via the health literacy of Nutbeam's concept. The data were analyzed according to the Diekelmann and Allen's guidelines.

The results showed the consists of functional health literacy, interactive health literacy, and critical health literacy were important factors contributing successful control of asthma.

In the future, the studies should be developed asthmatic literacy intervention extended to other areas. Mixed both quantitative and qualitative methods should be in order to get a clearer composition of factors in asthma control successfully. These suggestions should develop tools to measure health literacy in asthma control. The participants will be measured the results before and after the intervention activities to increase in asthma control literacy among asthmatic patients.
