QUALITY OF LIFE AMONG CAREGIVERS OF CHILDREN WITH DEVELOPMENTAL DELAY

Children with developmental delay may burden to their family members, especially their caregivers. The caregivers need to spend most of their time in taking care of their child as compared to caregivers of normal children. So, such caregivers are disturbed in other activities and diminish social life which leading to poor physical and emotional stress. This descriptive study aimed to identify the quality of life of caregivers of children with developmental delay and associated factors. The sample consisted of 74 caregivers of children attending at Rehabilitation Unit, Phatthalung Hospital. The World Health Organization Quality of Life Measure Abbreviated version (WHOQOL -BREF-THAI was used to measure the quality of life, Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (Thai HADS) was used to evaluated anxiety and depressive status, and other demographic data were derived from medical recorded and questionnaires. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, and Chi-square test.
The result showed that the overall QoL among caregivers of children with developmental delay were at high level, accounting for 55.40% of the sample. And factors associated with QoL were income sufficiency and work-hours per day.
This study showed that, taking care of children with developmental delayed affects all domain of their QoL, especially social relationships and environment aspects. And associated factors caused by care givers. So, holistic care is important to caregivers. If their QoL improves, they would provide more suitable care to their child. After all, the children could improve their well-being.
