EFFECTS OF EXTRAVASATION PREVENTION PRACTICE GUIDELINE ON EXTRAVASATION IN PATIENTS WITH CANCER UNDERGOING CHEMOTHERAPY

Abstract

Extravasation out of the peripheral veins is a serious complication. The objective of this study was to study the effects of extravasation prevention practice guideline on extravasation in patients with cancer undergoing chemotherapy. Study design was Quasi-experiment Research. Selection of samples by Simple Random sampling. The experimental group 30 cases, the control group 30 cases. Data collected between January and April 2022. Data were analyzed used descriptive statistics, Chi-square and Fisher’s exact test.

Results: The experimental group that used the extravasation prevention practice guideline can prevent leakage of chemotherapy drugs 96.7% and 90% of the control group did not have chemotherapy drug leaks, statistically non-significant at the significance level of 0.05 (p = 0.612). Cancer patients' satisfaction with the overall extravasation prevention practice guideline was at the highest level ( = 4.90), and nurses caring for cancer patients had the highest satisfaction level
( = 4.47).

Conclusion and recommendations: The results of this study show that extravasation prevention practice guideline used can prevent leakage of chemotherapy drugs out of blood vessels. The satisfaction of cancer patients and nurses was at high level. Therefore, this guideline should be used for planning to care cancer patients to increase quality and efficiency.
