Abstract

The purpose of the study was to analyze the prevalence, causes, and risk factors of ocular injuries in patients who underwent treatment at Amnatcharoen Hospital. The study is a retrospective descriptive study that gathered information from medical records of patients who received treatment for eye injuries between August 1, 2021 and May 31, 2023.

As a result, 696 eyes were injured in all, 481 men (69.1%). 42.55 is the average age. In the city were 425 patients (61.1%). The majority only injured one eye. There was no protective equipment used in these injuries.  245 patients (35.2%)were farmers and 252 (36.2%) were self-employed. Due to the harvesting season, it is anticipated that the number of patients will increase between January and February and July and October. 638(91.7%) individuals received outpatient care. 58 patients required hospitalization, with a 2.88-day average stay. The cost per patient was about 12,855 Thai baht. Corneal foreign body is the most common diagnosis. The risk factors were from working with 421 patients. The majority of patients have normal vision and 5 were completely blind.

Overall, compiling data on incidents of ocular injuries was of great use for creating a future plan for treatment and prevention at the city scale. This knowledge might be useful for encouraging farmers and other independent contractors to wear protective gear and to coordinate with other hospitals on treatment procedures for comprehensive therapy.
