THE DEVELOPMENT OF CLINICAL NURSING PRACTICE GUIDELINES FOR ELDERLY PATIENTS WITH PNEUMONIA AT SAKONNAKHON HOSPITAL

Abstract

Pneumonia in the elderly patients often results in prolonged hospital stays, increased healthcare costs, and the potential for mortality, especially in cases where there is a blood infection. The aim of this study was to develop and evaluate Clinical Nursing Practice Guidelines (CNPGs) tailored for elderly patients with pneumonia at Sakon Nakhon Hospital from November 2022 to July 2023.
The sample groups were categorized as follows: 1) A group of 18 nurses utilizing Clinical Nursing Practice Guidelines (CNPGs) and 2) Elderly patients with pneumonia admitted to the Male Geriatric Ward 2 at Sakon Nakhon Hospital, totaling 30 individuals. The data collection tools included
1) Clinical Nursing Practice Guidelines (CNPGs) and 2) the assessment questionnaire for the evaluation of Clinical Nursing Practice Guidelines. The data were analyzed using frequency distribution, percentage, mean, and standard deviation.

The research findings revealed that Clinical Nursing Practice Guidelines (CNPGs) for elderly patients with pneumonia, categorized into those who had not yet undergone respiratory intubation and those who had received respiratory intubation, were potentially applicable. The assessment of professional nursing outcomes indicated that the majority consistently adhered to the guidelines, with over 83.73%. On the patient's side, there was no evidence of pathogenic organisms, a low incidence of antibiotic resistance, and no complications during hospitalization. The mortality rate had decreased. The developed Clinical Nursing Practice Guidelines (CNPGs) were easily implementable.

There should be continuous supervision, guidance and assessment to improve the quality of patient care over time.
