THE DEVELOPMENT OF NURSING SUPERVISION MODEL FOR AFTER-HOUR NURSE SUPERVISORS, SENA HOSPITA, AYUTTHAYA PROVINCE

Abstract

This research and development study aimed to develop and evaluate a supervision model for after-hour nurse supervisors. Conducted between September 2023 and May 2024, the study was divided into four phases: situational analysis, model development, implementation, and evaluation and refinement. The sample included 22 nurse supervisors and 113 professional nurses working after hours. Research tools comprised knowledge and satisfaction assessment scales for the supervision model, as well as incident statistics in nursing. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, content analysis, Paired t-test.

The study found that the developed supervision model consisted of six components: 1) preparing nursing supervisors, 2) agreement setting, 3) issue listening and topic setting, 4) problem understanding and planning, 5) supervision implementation, and 6) review, evaluation, and feedback. Results after using the model indicated a significant increase in the average knowledge levels of nurse supervisors, rated as high, and a notable rise in satisfaction levels among both the nurse supervisors and the after-hour professional nurses, with satisfaction rated as very high. Statistical analysis revealed significant differences with a p-value < .001. Additionally, there were no recorded incidents of complaints regarding service behavior, bed management, or staffing.

Recommendations: The supervision model can be adapted for use in other nursing service units, with adjustments based on specific situational needs.
