Comparison of the Effects and the Side Effects of Sublingual and Vaginal Misoprostal for Termination of Early Pregnancy Failure
Abstract
Objectives: To compare complete abortion rate, duration of abortion, and side effects between sublingual and vaginal misoprostol.
Materials and Methods: Sixty pregnant women up to 12 weeks of gestation diagnosed with early pregnancy failure were randomized to receive 600 μg sublingual misoprostal or 600 μg vaginal misoprostol. If the abortion did not occur, the repeated medication would be done every 3 hours in case of the sublingual route or every 6 hours in case of the vaginal route, for maximum of three doses in totally.
Results: There was no difference in the effects on abortion , duration of abortion time and the side effects between two groups (p > 0.05). Diarrhea was common in the sublingual group. The side effects of both groups were similar which included abdominal pain, nausea, fever, heavy bleeding, headache and pelvic infection.
Conclusion: Sublingual misoprostal was as effective as vaginal misoprostal. Most side effects of both groups were similar except that diarrhea was more than in sublingual group.
