Psychological Impact of Elderly Caregivers Working in Thai Nursing Home: A Phenomenological Study

Caregivers of the elderly in nursing homes often face the psychological impact of their work experience. These effects are primarily due to the nature of the work that faces the vulnerability of service recipients and the limited working environment. This qualitative phenomenological approach was to study the psychological impact of elderly caregivers working in Thai nursing homes. Data were collected between January – March 2025 through semi-structured in-depth interviews. There were purposive nine informants were interviewed until the data was saturated. Thematic analysis was used for data analysis. The results found that five themes were emerged to explore the psychological impacts of elderly caregivers working in the Thai nursing home including: 1) Stress, frustrated, and emotional exhaustion caused by undesirable behaviors of elderly people in the nursing home; 2) Feelings of insecurity; 3) Guilt due to the lack of time for family; 4) Loneliness and diminished interpersonal relationships; and 5) Emotional distress caused by exposure to traumatic events. These findings might be used to provide foundational insights for mental health support to enhance the psychological well-being of caregivers working in Thai nursing homes.
