Effectiveness of the Capacity Development Program for Network Leaders in Promoting Mental Health in the Ban Mae Kui Public Health Service Center area of responsibility in Khelang Nakhon Municipality, Lampang Province

This quasi-experimental study with a two-group, pretest–posttest design aimed to compare mental health literacy, knowledge of mental health screening, and promotion and participation in mental health promotion among community network leaders in an experimental and comparison group before and after the intervention. The study sample consisted of 100 participants, including representatives from community leaders, women’s groups, youth groups, elderly groups, village health volunteers (VHVs), and community volunteers. Participants were equally divided into an experimental group (n = 50) and a comparison group (n = 50). The intervention lasted 20 weeks. The research instruments included a capacity development program for community network leaders in mental health promotion, a knowledge assessment on mental health screening and promotion, a mental health literacy assessment, and a participation in mental health promotion scale. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and t-tests for hypothesis testing.--- -------------------------------------------------------------------
The study revealed that the experimental group’s mean scores for mental health literacy, knowledge regarding mental health screening and promotion, and participation in mental health promotion of the network leaders were significantly higher after participating in the program compared with before participation (t = 23.39, p < .001; t = 13.23, p < .001; and t = 7.35, p < .001, respectively). The results of the comparison between groups showed that the mean score for mental health literacy and participation in mental health promotion of the experimental group were significantly higher than those of the comparison group at the .05 level t = 45.67, p <.001 และ t=7.35, p <.001. However, there was no significant difference between the experimental and comparison groups regarding knowledge of mental health screening and promotion. These findings suggest that empowering community leaders with sufficient capacity can foster sustainable community-based mental health promotion initiatives.
