Antioxidant Properties of Probiotics
Main Article Content
Abstract
Probiotics have been known for many beneficial health effects. They are intestinal bacteria have numerous important functions such as produce various nutrients for their host and prevent infections caused by intestinal pathogens. In this review, there are interests to find the potential probiotic that can exhibit antioxidant properties along with health benefits. Oxidative stress is the cause of various chronic human diseases. It is caused by increased activity of free radicals through the oxidation process. The consumption of probiotics alone or foods supplemented with probiotics may reduce oxidative damage. In vitro and in vivo studies indicate that probiotics exhibit antioxidant potential. Therefore, in recent years, finding safe natural antioxidants from bio-resources to replace synthetic antioxidants has received a great deal of attention. In this paper, the literature related to known antioxidant potential and antioxidant mechanisms of probiotics and proposing future perspectives to conduct such studies has been reviewed.
