The Knowledge on Disease Healing in TIPIṬAKA

Abstract

This article aims to present knowledge on disease healing appeared in TIPIṬAKA. The disease healing in Tipiṭaka focuses on the relationship between body and mind, the therapist will not just cure physical disease, because physical diseases affect the human mind. Disease healing in TIPIṬAKA are classified into 4 categories: 1) Disease healing that rely on supernatural powers, such as magic spellings, healing with phantoms; 2) Disease healing by many types of medicines are classified into 4 categories: (1) the medicine classified by methods of use such as medicine for taking, medicine for fondling, medicine for baking; (2) the medicine classified by it’s type such as root and leaf; (3) the medicine classified by production process such as pickled and decoction medicine; (4) the other types of medicine classified by different materials, such as salt, raw meat and fresh blood, soil attached to the plow plate, and 4 MAHAVIGATA medicines, ie, feces, urine, ash, and soil; 3) Surgical methods of healing (surgery); and 4) Other healing methods, such as bandages, wound cleansing, fumigation, and the use of horns of animals to suck and drain some blood, pus or wind from the body.
