Mission Integration: Challenging Roles of Instructors in Higher Education Institutions

Abstract

            The four main missions of higher education institutions were to produce graduates with the quality, to conduct research for creating new knowledge, to apply knowledge for academic services to the society, and to maintain arts and culture. The instructors should develop and improve their tasks and the process of teaching and learning to meet the needs of society. Also, they should maintain the quality and standard of education in accordance with national education standards. Therefore, instructors should work in the form of integrating mission according to educational quality assurance criteria.

            Mission integration refers to the implementation of those 4 core missions in harmony, so that; the institution can perform its mission fully and efficiently. To develop students to their full potential and quality according to the National Higher Education Qualifications Framework, the instructor should be done as follow: Integration of teaching and research could be done by inserting the research process into the course which is not a research subject. There are three steps to integrate: 1) allowing students to participate in the research of the professor 2) bring the knowledge from research into teaching content, and 3)allowing students to participate in academic research activities such as presentations. Integration of teaching and academic service aimed to develop students to learn in the real situations. There are 2 steps to integrate: 1) bring the knowledge from academic service into teaching content, and 2) encourage students to participate in academic service. Moreover, integration of teaching and maintaining arts and culture aimed to develop students to be a part of art and cultural. There are 2 steps to integrate: 1) bring the knowledge from art and culture into teaching, and 2) allowing students to create the project about art and culture, including folk wisdom.
