The Role of Nurses in Caring for Patients Undergoing Abdominal Surgery

Abdominal surgery is considered a major surgical procedure. Patients who undergo this type of surgery require a particular standard of nursing care to prevent trauma or other complications, such as anxiety, hypothermia, hemorrhage, pain, and surgical site infection (SSI). Nurses care for the patients throughout all stages of surgery. Therefore, it is necessary for nurses to acquire the knowledge and increase their awareness of their roles in caring for patients undergoing abdominal surgery. This will improve their confidence in performing high quality care and, thereby, increase patient safety and improve patient outcomes. This article will present the essence of the various impacts and complications that may arise with regard to abdominal surgery, as well as presenting these nursing roles in caring for patients who undergo abdominal surgery.
