Factors Related to Decision Making about Getting Dental Treatments in the Dental Clinic of Ranong Hospital, Ranong Province

The number of clients receiving dental services at Ranong Hospital in Ranong Province, Thailand is tending to decrease. The purpose of this cross-sectional analytical study is to study the behaviors of the clients seeking dental services, their decision making about getting dental treatment, and the factors related to their decision making about getting dental treatments. The participants were 367 individuals aged 15 years old and up who had received treatment at Ranong Hospital’s dental clinic between July and September 2022. Data was collected using a questionnaire about the factors related to their decision making about getting dental treatment. The instrument had an index of item-objective congruence (IOC) between .6-1.0 and a Cronbach's alpha coefficient of .76. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Chi-square tests and Fisher's exact tests. The results of the study revealed that most clients chose to receive dental treatment services (91.8%), received general dental examination/ treatment services (52.5%), choose to receive services independently (48.8%), and paid for their treatment using universal coverage (64.9%). Researchers found that the clinic’s personnel had the most effect on the participants’ decision making related to getting dental treatment (M = 4.66, SD = 0.35) followed by location which ranked at a high level (M = 3.99, SD = 0.46). Additional factors that were found to be related to the decision making about getting dental treatments were: clients decision making for choosing services (χ2 (4, n = 367) = 8.90, p = .033) and treatment payment method (χ2 (6, n = 367) = 12.24, p = .048). The conclusion is that the dental service unit should continually analyze the service environment to develop an efficient service system and to meet the needs of the clients receiving recipients to encourage / persuade more potential clients to decide to use their services.
