Effects of a Maternal Coaching Program on the Caring Behavior of Mothers with Preterm Newborns

Preterm birth rates are increasing worldwide. Preterm newborns are more likely to have severe and fatal health problems due to their immaturity. Care to promote their survival and appropriate development depends on cooperation between health care providers and the family, especially the mother. This quasi-experimental research aimed to study the effects of a Maternal Coaching Program on maternal behavior in caring for preterm newborns. Research participants were 40 mothers whose preterm baby was admitted in a tertiary hospital. They were purposively selected according to inclusion criteria. Twenty participants were assigned to the comparison group where they received usual care, while the other twenty were assigned to the experimental group which received usual care plus the maternal coaching program with an educational application. Data were collected using the Maternal Behavior in Caring for Preterm Newborns questionnaire, which had a content validity index of .90 and Cronbach’s alpha coefficient of .81. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and t-tests. The results showed that, after participating in the program, the mothers in the experimental group had statistically significant higher mean scores for maternal behavior in caring for a preterm newborn (M = 3.71, SD = 0.11) than the mothers in the comparison group (M = 3.07, SD = 0.18), t(38) = -7.791, p < .001, d = 4.29). This demonstrates that nurses responsible for caring for preterm newborn can integrate the maternal coaching program into their discharge plans to help mothers provide the correct care for their newborns, which will benefit the newborns’ health, growth, and development.
