Promoting development is a part of infant care. The behavior tendencies of mothers that promote infant development are probably relate with self-efficacy and outcome expectancies. The objectives of this research were to study the correlations among perceived self-efficacy, outcome expectancies of promoting development, and behavior tendency on maternal promotion of preterm infant development. The subjects were selected using purposive sampling and included 80 mothers whose preterm infant was admitted into the neonatal care unit. The data collection instruments were the demographic data record form for mothers and preterm infants, a perceived self-efficacy questionnaire with a Content Validity Index (CVI) 0.87, an outcome expectancies of promoting development questionnaire with a CVI of 0.83, and a tendency promoting preterm infant development questionnaire with a CVI of 0.83. The reliabilities of the instruments were 0.90, 0.94, and 0.91 respectively. The results of study revealed that there was a significantly positive correlation in the low level between the perceived self-efficacy of mothers with promoting preterm infant development and the tendency maternal promotion of preterm infant development were significance level of 0.05. (r = .209, p < .05). There was a significantly positive correlation in the middle level between the outcome expectancies of promoting development and the tendency of maternal promotion preterm infant development was significant at the significance level of 0.01. (r = .460, p < .001) and there was a significantly positive correlation in low level between the perceived self-efficacy of mothers with promoting preterm infant development and the outcome expectancies of promoting development were significant at the level of 0.05. (r = .191, p < .05). Therefore, nurses should encourage mothers to develop self-efficacy in promoting their infant's development in the hospital setting to foster consistent behaviors in supporting their infant's development.
