Abstract

Depression in older adults tends to increase and become more severe. However, studies of factors that can predict depression in older adults living in public care homes in Thailand are limited. The objective of this study was to study the factors that can predict depression among older adults living in public care homes. The participants of the study were 78 older adults residing in a public care home in Nakhon Ratchasima Province. Data were collected using the following tools: the Barthel Activities of Daily Living survey, the Thai Geriatric Depression Scale, the 6-Item Revised UCLA Loneliness Scale, the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support, the Rosenberg self-esteem scale-Thai Revised, and the Resilience Inventory. The data was analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson correlations, and multiple regression analysis. The study found that 19.23% of older adults experienced depression. The participants’ activities of daily living, self-esteem, and resilience were negatively correlated with depression among older adults (r = -.276, r = -.386, and r = -.400, respectively). Loneliness was positively correlated with depression (r = .496). Furthermore, it was found that loneliness could predict depression scores among older adults (beta = .333, p = .006). Therefore, public care homes should prioritize supporting social activities to reduce loneliness and prevent depression among older adults residing in these facilities.
