Abstract

This descriptive qualitative research aimed to investigate the roles and needs of professional nurses in managing the care to slow down kidney deterioration in stage 3 Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD). The participants were 13 nurses in a chronic kidney disease clinics selected through purposive sampling from hospitals in Phetchaburi province. The data collection period was from January to March 2024. The research tools used included a semi-structured interview on the roles of nurses in the case management of patients of stage 3 cCKD, a field note recording form, and a tape recorder. Trustworthiness was verified through credibility, dependability, transferability, and confirmability. The qualitative data were analyzed using content analysis. The role of professional nurses in managing the care to slow the kidney decline of patients with stage 3 CKD consisted of three key aspects: 1) being the primary coordinator, 2) being the planner, and 3) being the service providers for monitoring and evaluation. In addition, the needs of professional nurses in managing the care to slow the kidney decline of patients with stage 3 CKDwere focused on three main areas: 1) the need to develop digital skills for work, 2) the need to develop a workforce management system, and 3) the need to develop knowledge management and research on innovations. The results of this study impact nurses in terms of developing professional skills and enhancing their ability to care for patients with stage 3 CKD in order to slow down the progression of kidney deterioration.
