Abstract

Patients with severe brain injuries need appropriate rehabilitation before discharge planning. Needs assessment of their caregivers is essential. This qualitative descriptive research aimed to describe the needs of caregivers providing care for patients with severe brain injuries before discharge planning. The participants were 15 caregivers of patients with severe traumatic brain injuries. Data were collected by in-depth interviews between May 1, 2023 - April 18, 2024, and analyzed by content analysis. The results found that the needs of caregivers providing patients with severe traumatic brain injuries before discharge planning were divided into 5 main themes, as follows: 1) preparation of caregivers consisted of 3 sub-themes: information, skills training in patient care, and medical equipment; 2) patient care consisted of 4 sub-themes: activities daily living care, dressing tracheostomies and tracheostomy tubes, rehabilitation, and prevention of complications; 3) effects of caregivers consisted of 4 sub-themes: physical, mental, social, and economic issues; 4) healthcare provider support consisted of  3 sub-themes: home visits, healthcare guidance and advice through the LINE mobile application, and providing teaching media for caregivers: and 5) social support consisted of 3 sub-themes: medical equipment, health expenditures, and social welfare. Findings from this research contributed to a new understanding of caregivers' needs and these results develop the foundation of a tailored discharge program for patients with severe traumatic brain injuries to be developed through further study.
