Nursing Care of Patients with Cancer of the Sigmoid Colon: Case study
Keywords:
cancer of sigmoid, nursing careAbstract
Colorectal cancer is one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers worldwide, especially among older adults. One of the most frequently affected areas is the sigmoid colon, which is the curved section of the large intestine located just before the rectum. This disease has a significant impact on both the physical and psychological well-being of patients. Therefore, nursing care for these patients must be thorough, comprehensive, and focused on holistic care that addresses individual needs. This article reviews nursing approaches for patients with sigmoid colon cancer based on the nursing process, which includes three essential phases: assessment, nursing interventions, and evaluation. The review was rooted in clinical practice guidelines and relevant academic literature. Findings indicate that effective nursing begins with a comprehensive assessment that encompasses physical aspects—such as nutritional status, bowel habits, and pain—and psychological aspects, including anxiety and depression. Nursing interventions should focus on symptom management, patient education about the disease and treatment options, nutritional and emotional support, and guidance for family members to promote ongoing care at home. In conclusion, nursing care for patients with sigmoid colon cancer should be holistic and patient-centered. A detailed assessment, appropriate interventions, and continuous evaluation are crucial for improving patients’ quality of life throughout their cancer care journey.
