Factors Associated with Self Care Behavior for Delaying Knee Osteoarthritis Progression in Patients with a Kellgren–Lawrence Grade 2–3

This descriptive cross-sectional study aimed to study the relationships between sex, age, body mass index (BMI), number of affected knees, and knee severity (KL grading) and self care behaviors for delaying knee osteoarthritis (KOA) progression in osteoarthritis knee patients with a Kellgren–Lawrence grade 2–3. A total of 138 patients who were receiving care at a university hospital in eastern Thailand were included in the study. The data were collected by questionnaires on demographics and clinical characteristics and delaying knee osteoarthritis progression behavior. Descriptive statistics and correlation analyses were used for data analysis. The results revealed that the majority of participants were female (79.70%), with an average age of 69.13 years (SD = 6.97), and an average BMI 24.86 kg/m² (SD = 4.14). Most participants had bilateral KOA (91.30%) and were classified as having grade 3 severity (54.30%). The average score for delaying knee osteoarthritis progression behavior was 56.22 (SD = 5.72), indicating a high level. Correlation analysis showed that sex, age, BMI, number of affected knees, and knee severity (KL grading) were all significantly associated with self-care behavior for delaying knee osteoarthritis progression (r = .200, .226, –.189, .197, .191; p < .05, respectively). The findings of this study have benefits for the assessment and development of nursing interventions in order to promote self-care behaviors among patients with knee osteoarthritis, particularly older adults or overweight/obese females. Such models may help reduce the severity, or delay the progression, of knee osteoarthritis over time.
