Abstract

Life skills enhancement serves as a vital approach to promoting knowledge and skills for the prevention of cannabis use. This study employed a quasi-experimental research design, specifically a one-group pretest-posttest design, to investigate the effects of a life skills enhancement program on knowledge and life skills for preventing recreational cannabis use among early adolescents. The sample consisted of 45 adolescents, aged 12–15years. The sample size was determined via G*Power and selected through multi-stage random sampling. The research instruments included the life skills enhancement program and data collection tools which consisted of: 1) a personal information questionnaire, 2) a cannabis use prevention knowledge assessment, and 3) a life skills assessment. The instruments demonstrated content validity indices of .92 and .96, respectively. The reliability of the knowledge assessment yielded a KR-20 value of .86, while the life skills assessment showed a Cronbach’s alpha coefficient of .96. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and paired t-tests. The results revealed that, after participating in the program, the subjects’ mean scores for knowledge (M = 6.58, SD = 1.18) and life skills for preventing recreational cannabis use (M = 4.07, SD = .43) increased with statistical significance (p < .001). These findings demonstrate that the life skills enhancement program effectively promotes both the knowledge and life skills necessary for preventing recreational cannabis use among early adolescents.
