บทความนี้มีจุดประสงค์เพื่อทบทวนประวัติของการคุมกำเนิดและการยุติการตั้งครรภ์ เพื่อความเข้าใจอย่างถ่องแท้ของทั้งปัญหาที่กระทบต่อการจัดการและการควบคุมภาวะเจริญพันธุ์ของสตรี ถูกแสดงให้เห็นว่าทั้งแนวคิดเรื่องของการจัดการและการควบคุมภาวะเจริญพันธุ์นี้ไม่ใช่สิ่งใหม่และการปฏิบัติที่ไม่ปลอดภัยนั้นมีผลต่ออัตราตายของมารดาทั่วโลก มีการเสนอแนะว่าสตรีควรได้รับการเข้าถึงวิธีการคุมกำเนิดสมัยใหม่ ไม่แพง เชื่อถือได้ และปลอดภัย ยิ่งไปกว่านั้นยังถูก เสนอแนะว่าการยุติการตั้งครรภ์เป็นสิ่งที่สตรีสามารถเข้าถึงบริการได้ มีความปลอดภัย และถูกกฎหมาย
