Abstract

This quasi-experimental research aimed to study the effects of a self-management program for glycemic control among insulin dependent type 2 diabetes mellitus patients aged between 35-59 years old ongoing diabetic treatment at the chronic disease clinic, Phimai hospital, Nakhon Ratchasima province. Fifty-nine individuals were assigned into the experimental group (n = 30) and the comparison group (n = 29). The 6-week-program activities derived from the self-management concepts. Data were collected using a set of before and after completion of the program. Percentage, mean, standard deviation, and t-test statistics were employed for data analysis. The post test revealed that, the self-management mean score of the experimental group (M = 90.6, SD = 7.0) was higher than the comparison group (M = 83.37, SD = 9.14), t =-9.005, p < .05, df = 29. However, within group comparison of average fasting blood sugar levels, both of the experimental group and the comparison group at pre-test and at post-test, were not statistically different (p-value = .124 and .909, respectively). In addition, the average fasting blood sugar at post-test between groups also revealed no statistical difference (p-value = .146). It is recommended follow-up could promote self-assessment and self-management behavior on proper insulin injection. Health literacy perception on nutritional consumption and proper exercise for glycemic control are recommended for further studies.
