Abstract

Current reports indicate a global increase in the incidence of substance use among pregnant women. Substance use during pregnancy is a significant public health problem that adversely affects both maternal and neonatal health outcomes. This descriptive cross-sectional study aimed to examine the prevalence of substance use behaviors and the factors associated with substance use among pregnant women. The sample consisted of 167 pregnant women who received antenatal care at 19 public hospitals in Roi Et Province, Thailand. Participants were selected using multi-stage random sampling. Data were collected using a general information interview questionnaire and a substance use interview questionnaire. The study was conducted between February and June 2024. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and multiple logistic regression analysis. The results revealed that 56.3% of the participants had a lifetime history of substance use, 33.5% reported substance use in the past 12 months, and 28.1% reported substance use during pregnancy. Personal factors jointly predicted substance use during pregnancy, accounting for 78% of the variance (R² = .60, F (6,160) = 40.28, p < .05). Significant factors influencing substance use during pregnancy included educational level (β₁ = −.10, p < .05), income adequacy (β₂ = .15, p < .05), relationship with spouse/partner (β₃ = .09, p < .05), and prior substance use history (β₄ = .43, p < .05). These findings suggest that the results should be applied to develop screening guidelines for identifying pregnant women at risk of substance use and facilitating timely entry into treatment and rehabilitation programs.
