Effects of Academic Service Integration with Teaching and Learning to Strengthen the Competencies of the Elderly Care in the Community of Nursing Students.
Abstract
Objectives : To examine the effects of academic service integration with teaching and learning to strengthen the competencies of the elderly care in the community of nursing students.
Methods : This study was quasi experimental research study with one group pre-posttest design. A sample group was totally 95 second-year nursing students enrolled in the 2016 academic year at Srimahasarakham Nursing College. This study was conducted between October 2016 - April 2017. Research instruments included questionnaires on personal data and nursing students’ competency of the elderly care in the community questionnaires. The data were analyzed using frequency percentage, mean, standard deviation, and paired t-test.
Results : The nursing students’ competency of the elderly care in the community in overall score was at high level. More specific, the highest top four scores for nursing students’ competencies were teamwork, health promotion and disease prevention, community access, and chronic care, respectively. In addition, the nursing students’ competency of the elderly care in the community in overall score was significantly higher defore after participating at the level of .05. More specific, the nursing students’ competencies of the elderly care in the community in four domains were significantly higher than defore participating at the level of .05.
Conclusion : Academic service integration with teaching and learning could strengthen the competencies of the elderly care in the community of nursing students.
