The Study of Local Knowledge on Cataract Treatment Using Calamus Needles: A Case Study of Mr. Cha-em Khumphech

Abstract
Since Thai patients are still assured by folk medicine or local wisdom on the treatment of eye diseases including cataract, this qualitative study aims to demonstrate and analyze the knowledge of folk medicine or local wisdom performed by Mr. Cha-em Khumphech in Nathung, Sawankhalok, Sukhothai, the application of calamus needles. Gathered from a folk medicine practitioner, the data collection comprises of in-depth interview and non-participant observation. This empirical study reveals that Mr. Cha-em Khumphech acquired his local knowledge of cataract treatment from Mr. Songkram Inbua and he can practicing on applying calamus needles to cure the disease. The result from the 20 patients after receiving the treatment shows that all of them had better eye sight allowing them to see things clearer. These successful outcomes greatly assured the patients’ satisfaction, believes, and faith on the local treatment. So, this homegrown knowledge should be maintained and publicized for the health promotion of the people, and the sustainability of local Thai knowledge.
