Factors Associated with Relapsed Patients with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE)

A Relapse of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus [SLE] leads to higher complication and mortality rates. The objective of this study was to examine the factors associated with a relapse of SLE. Participants consisted of 145 female patients with SLE who were selected by purposive sampling. Data were collected using a three-part instrument which included: the General Data Questionnaire, the Behavioral Measure of Patients with SLE (α=.84), and the Assessment Form for a Relapse of SLE (α =.87). Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, point biserial correlations, and Pearson's correlation coefficients. The results showed that, among patients who experienced a moderate level relapse of SLE (M = 13.66, SD = 4.27), the only factor associated with their relapse was the duration since their SLE was diagnosed (r (145) = 0.201, p < .05). Therefore, nursing guidelines should be developed for practitioners to help them prevent a relapse of SLE in patients who have been diagnosed for a longer period of time.
