Behavioral Factors Affecting Glycemic Control Among Non Insulin Dependent Dabetes Mellitus (NIDDM) Patient in Primary Care Unit Supervised by Surin Hospital

Abstract

Background: Morbidity and mortality rate of diabetes patients continually increase otherwise without closely control of disease and its complication. Present treatment of diabetes aims to prevent or decrease progression of the complication by medication and health behavior modification. Appropriated health behavior consequently resulted in good disease control and decrease progression of disease complication.
Objective: To study glycemic control behavior in NIDDM patients and identify behavioral factors affected glycemic control in NIDDM patients
Study design: Descriptive study
Methods: Sample group were 178 of NIDDM patients enrolled in primary care units supervised by Surin hospital during 1st to 31st March 2006. Data collected by questionnaire adapted from Health Belief Model and the factors affected patient glycemic control behavior were statistically analyzed by Chi-square and Pearson correlation coefficient.
Result: In 95.5% of diabetes patients had good glycemic control. Factors that statistically affected patient glycemic control behavior were perception of complication risk and knowledge of disease information in all aspects (p < 0.05).
Conclusion: This study proposed suggestion for improves patient glycemic control behavior by patient education or counseling emphasize on risk of disease complication and disease information in all aspects.
