Abstract
Background: Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) in premature baby is one of the complication in preterm and low birthweight (LBW) baby that exposure to oxygen
Objective: To study the incidence rate of ROP and evaluate the relationship in premature baby and LBW baby that was conducted at pediatrics intensive care unit and sick newborn unit of Amnartcharoen hospital during October 1st, 2002 to September 30th, 2003.
Research design: Descriptive, retrospective study
Patients: Premature baby (gestational age < 37 weeks) or low birthweight baby (birthweight < 2500 grams)
Method: Data was collected and analyzed from medical records between October 1st, 2002 to September 30th, 2003
Result: 38 patients at the pediatric ICU and sick newborn ward had ROP screening. In these patients,7 of 38 (18.42 %) developed ROP and all of them had oxygen treatment. 17 patients had birthweight between 1.000-1,500 grams and 6 of them (35.29 %) developed ROP and then 2 patients (33.33 %)had good changed ROP when follow up. 21 patients had birthweight more than 1,500 grams and 1 of them (4.76 %) developed ROP and improved later. When follow up in staging of ROP, 2 patients were stage I and 1 patients were stage II with stable disease, 3 patients improved or cured ROP after treatment and 1 patient became worse.
Conclusion: This study suggested that the cure rate on ROP, which developed on premature baby, depend on gestational age and birthweight of premature baby. The relationship between APGAR score.CPR-needed and the lenght of oxygen therapy and incidence of ROP are not cleared as in other study,
Key words: retinopathy of prematurity (ROP)
