A study of serum autoantibodies in patients with lupus nephritis

A retrospective study of antinuclear antibody, anti Sm, anti DNA and anti RNP in patients with SLE and lupus nephritis was done in the Instiutute of Dermatology, Thailand from October 1997 to September 2002. A total of 462 SLE cases, 21 cases had lupus nephritis, 18 cases were female and 3 cases were male, ratio is 6:1. Age range is from 11 to 63 years (average 31.05 years) most of them in the range of21 -40 years. All cases were positive to ANA positive with a
high titer, 12 cases (57.1%) were in the range of 640 - 2560 and mostly in 13 cases (61.9%) showed speckle pattern. The anti DNA showed positive in 6 cases from 20 cases (30%,), anti Sm showed positive in 7 from 19 cases (36.87%) and anti RNP'showed positive in 9 from 19 cases (47.36%). The result of this study was different from the former studies which ANA pattern homogeneous pattern, with higher percentage of anti dsDNA and anti Sm positive. In this study the SLE cases who had the chief complain of skin manifestation has a low incidence oflupus nephritis.
