Applying Nursing Ethics Principles to Nursing Practice of 2nd Years Nursing Students Faculty of Nursing, Princess of Naradhiwas University

Abstract

This research is a qualitative study with a phenomenological approach. The purpose of this research was to study the meaning and application of nursing ethics principles to the nursing practice of second-year nursing students at the, Faculty of Nursing, Princess of Naradhiwas University. Probability sampling method with simple random sampling was used for the sample selection. Five representatives were chosen from within each group of students assigned to different wards by drawing lots, totaling 30 participants. Data collection was conducted through 3 focus group sessions. The research instrument used an interview form with semi-structured questions regarding the application of ethical principles in nursing practice. The Index of Item-Objective Congruence (IOC) was 1. Data were analyzed using content analysis. The research findings revealed that the meaning of nursing ethics was defined as working collaboratively with others with integrity, responsibility, doing good, and being honest. Applying nursing ethics to nursing practice was accomplished using the following: 1. Announcing the name and status of students, explaining the treatment and accepting the decision. 2. Providing nursing care with gentleness and caring for patients with correct techniques. 3. Not causing harm to patients. 4. Providing assistance to all patients. 5. Explaining symptoms and treatment to patients. 6. Not disclosing patient history and not concealing anything bad that had occurred. The findings of this study can be utilized by instructors teaching nursing theory and practice courses as examples of applying ethical principles in nursing practice. Additionally, they can guide the development of teaching models that align with other nursing practice courses, thereby enhancing students' ability to integrate ethical principles into their clinical practice.
