Impact of Dental Health Status on The Quality of Life of The Elderly Patient in Dental Clinic at Surin Hospital.

Abstract

Background: Oral health of the elderly affects the quality of life. The most problems are periodontitis, dental caries and tooth loss.
Objective: To determine oral health status and its impact on quality of life of the elderly patient in dental clinic at Surin hospital.
Method: This study is a descriptive cross- sectional analysis, included 205 persons by oral examination and interview using oral health index in relation to quality of life (OHIP-49) covering 7 categories including the limitation of function, physical pain, physical disability, psychological discomfort, psychological disability, social disability and handicap. Descriptive data analysis and variable relationship analysis.
Results: The findings showed that 67.8 percent had dental caries, with the mean DMFT being 12.1 and approximately 81.5 percent had severe gingival attachment loss. About 62 percent had tooth attrition, the mean total OHIP-49 score was 55.49±20.73. The relationship of dental health conditions to quality of life of the elderly those with a OHIP-49 score higher than the mean related to tooth attrition, dental caries, gingival swelling, oral ulcer, poor oral hygiene, and never getting dental care knowledge.
Conclusion: There should be a development model for solving oral health problems in the elderly to reduce the impact of dental health problems on quality of life.
