The Study of Dental Health Status and Related Factors in Elderly Muang Buriram

Abstract
Background: The proportion of older adults in Thailand will continue to grow during the next few decades. Aging populations will bring unique challenges to dentistry. Oral health is essential to an older adult’s general health and well-being. Understanding of dental health status and related factors will help the profession become prepared.
Objective: To describe dental health. Focus is placed on oral health status in relation to dental health practice and socio-economic determinant in elderly people.
Setting: In Buriram Province.
Design: Descriptive Research. (Survey study) Subject: A total of 404 participants aged between 60 and 92 years.
Method: The participants were examined dental health. Data on sociodemographics and health were collected using interviewer-administered questionnaires. Statistical analysis was evaluated by the Chi-square test.
Result: The data showed that the mean number of tooth loss per person was 15.2. There were 15.8% of all respondents who were edentulous and 9.9 % were denture wearers. Additionally, it was found that 42.8% of all respondents brushed twice a day and 0.7% of them used dental floss. The association of retaining at least 20 natural teeth and factors, the data showed that dental health practice, sex and age are related to the oral health status statistically significant.(p<0.05)
Conclusion: This study indicate that important dental health practice differences exist in dental health status, and are related to sex and age. Our findings contribute to deeper understanding of the background of oral health status and thus increase our knowledge about factors that promote oral health in old age.
