Prevalence of Diabetic Retinopathy in Amphur Muang Buriram

Abstract
Background: Diabetic retinopathy (DR), A retinal vascular disorder that occurs as a complication of diabetes mellitus (DM), is a leading cause of blindness in Thailand, often affecting working-aged adults.
Objective: To determine the prevalence of diabetic retinopathy in Amphur Muang Buriram.
Research design: Descriptive analytic study
Subjects: Patients with diabetes mellitus in Amphur Muang Buriram between January through May, 2011.
Methods: Data from medical records were collected and analyzed by SPSS program.
Results: 1,952 patients in 21 primary care units in Amphur Muang were screened during January 2011 - May 2011. The prevalence of diabetic retinopathy was 10.09 percent, which consisted of non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy (NPDR) 9.48 percent, and proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) 0.61 percent.
Conclusions: The regular screening program in primary care units could provide early detection and early treatment which were necessary to prevent and delay DR complications.
