Abstract

Streptococcus suis infection in humans causes a wide range of diseases, including skin and soft tissue infection, toxic shock syndrome, sepsis, endocarditis, septic arthritis, pneumonia, and meningitis. เท humans, particularly those in close contact with pigs or pig products, it has been reported that meningitis and /or septicemia followed by deafness can occur.
A 46 year-old Thai male suffered a severe headache for one day before coming to the hospital. A week prior to the headache, he ingested raw pork with uncooked pig’s blood and alcohol. His severe headache was caused by Streptococcal suis meningitis and bacteremia. He was treated with Penicillin G 18 million units per day for two weeks. Sensorineural hearing loss and vertigo developed two days after he had a severe headache. Corticosteroid was added to the antibiotic therapy, but sensorineural hearing loss did not improve. Sensorineural hearing loss and vertigo have remained a serious complication incurrunt by the patient from this infection
