Development of Post - Operative Pain Nursing Management

Abstract
Background: Post-operative pain causes physiological changes through stimulation of autonomic nervous system which increases blood pressure and heart rate. The pains aggravate patients and make them discomfort and torture. Therefore development of post-operative pain nursing management is an important role of nurse in order to assess and relieve the post-operative pain effectively for better clinical outcome and patient satisfaction.
Objective: To develop the nursing care plan for post-operative nursing management in eluding outcome evaluation Surgery and Orthopedics Wards, Surin Hospital
Study Desing: Action research
Method: Sample group was 106 registered nurses and 160 patients in Surin hospital. Study period was conducted from January to October 2010. Research tools included pain management assessment and nurse satisfaction assessment forms in which approved for content validity from five experts. The study was comprised of three phases; the first phase included situation analysis about post-operative pain management to define the root causes of its relevant problems. Phase II pertained development of post-operative pain care plan covered post-operative admission, pain assessment, pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic pain management, outcome assessment and process of the care plan implementation. Phase III was the evaluation process of developed care plan. Statistical analysis included percentage, mean, t-test and content analysis.
Result: Outcome after applied the nursing care plan for pain management to practice found that patient’s satisfaction to nursing care was significantly increased in all aspects (p <0.001) and nurse’s satisfaction to the developed care plan was also more over 80% in all aspects.
Conclusion: The developed nursing care plan for post-operative management resulted in holistic patient care, convenient and applicable. The guideline was explicit in each step of nursing care moreover practitioners and patients satisfied with the result of the care plan.
