Complications from Spinal Anesthesia in Caesarian Section Delivery, Surin Hospital

Abstract

Objective: To study incidence of complication from spinal anesthesia and factors related to spinal anesthesia’s complication.
Setting: Department of anesthesia, Surin hospital
Study design: Descriptive study
Sample group: 280 cases of caesarian section delivery patients with spinal anesthesia in Surin hospital.
Method: Research data collected by anesthetic nurse during December 2007 to March 2008. Data analyzed and descriptive statistics presented by percentile mean and standard deviation. Relationship between risk factors and complication was verified by Chi-square test.
Result: The study found patients who underwent caesarian section delivery by spinal anesthesia aged between 16-30 years (63.2%), weight under than 60 kg (42.5%) and height over than 150 cm (66.1%). The most frequently found complications were hypotension (39.6%), nausea vomiting (6.1%) and chill (5.4%). Factors related to spinal anesthesia in caesarian section delivery patients; fluid replacement was significant related to chill at p = 0.01 while age, weight, height, blood loss, posture arrangement during spinal anesthesia and amount of anesthesia did not related to anesthetic complication.
Conclusion: Result from this study is benefit for further improvement and development of spinal anesthetic procedure by providing additional knowledge to anesthetic nurses to provide nursing care, prevent and manage possible anesthetic complications promptly.
