Abstract

Introduction: The incidents of postanesthetic hypoxia were 16.7-55%. The complication were seriously lead to cause of death. The causes of hypoxia were preventable and treatable causes.
Objective: To demonstrate a model of postanesthetic care to prevent postoperative hypoxia and compared incidents of postanesthetic hypoxia between before and after implementation a model.
Setting: Buriram Hospital during April 1st 2007-July 15th 2007.
Study design: Prospective experimental study
Methods: The following parameters were compared between patients who were un¬dergone operation before and after implementation of a model of postanesthetic care to prevent postoperative hypoxia in age, sex, ASA physical status, operation time, PAR score and hypoxia during recovery rooms.
Statistics: Percentage, mean, standard deviation, Chi-Square test Fisher’s exact test
Results: A new model postanesthetic care was established which contained preop¬erative airways assessment, patients’ information, continuous monitoring, PAR score and hypoxia episode in recovery rooms. There were 1,675 patients, 48.72% were male and 68.77% were ASA physical status 1 before implementation a model. Compared with 1,753 patients after implementation a model 48.49% were male and 68.17% were ASA physical status 1. The incidences of postoperative hypoxia were reduce from 2.09% to 1.14% with significant difference (p<0.05).
Conclusion: A model of postanesthetic care to prevent postoperative hypoxia was implemented and reduce incidents of postanesthetic hypoxia of Buriram hospital in recovery rooms.
