An Average Length of Stay of Rupture Appendicitis Patients, Surin Hospital

Abstract

Objective: To study to compare the average length of stay of rupture appendicitis patients admitted in Surin hospital with those of standard reference. The result was then analyzed to verify the factors affected length of stay in these patients.
Research design: Retrospective Descriptive study.
Setting: Department of surgery, Surin hospital.
Patient and Method: Sample group were 100 Patient diagnosed with ruptured appendicitis admitted at surgery department, Surin hospital. Data of collected from 100 patient charts and Performance Rupture Appendicitis Database during October 2006-September 2007. Research tool was a collective form of average length of stay from rupture appendicitis. Descriptive statistics in this study were percentage, mean and standard deviation. The t-test and F-test were used as inferential statistics at significant level p=0.05.
Results: Average length of stay of the sample group was 4.71 days (the minimum was 2 hospital days and maximum was 24 hospital days). The average length of stay of the sample group was less than the standard reference with statistically significant. The factors affected length of stay of appendicitis patients with statistically significant in this study were age, attending surgeon, post operative antibiotic therapy, type of suture procedure and time to first suture while the other factors were considered as non-significant to the length of stay.
Conclusion: The result from this study is benefit for further development of the recent patient care plan (CPG rupture appendicitis) used in surgery patient care team to achieve indicators goal and decrease hospital length of stay including hospitalization expenditure.
