Assessment of Medical Emergency Service Tha-Toom Hospital Surin Province

Abstract

Background: According to the conceptual framework of medical emergency service development strategic planning 2007-2012, to provide the service nationwide in hospital setting and effective referral system. The assessment of emergency medical service is therefore the tool to improve the service to achieve the goal of emergency medical service.
Objectives: To describe the outcome of emergency medical service development project of Tha-Toom hospital Sunn province and to create action plan to improve the effective emergency medical service.
Study Design: Descriptive retrospective study
Method: Data collected from medical emergency service chart issued by department of emergency medical service system from 1st October to 31st December 2007. Collected data was assessed with criteria indicators of the 13th public health area to identify causes and factors that affected the emergency medical service and goal achievement of development plan.
Result: According to data collected from medical emergency service charts of 606 patients found that the service achieved six indicators from seven of 13th public health area standard criteria as described; coverage of serviced area (55.70%), ratio of advance life support to basic life support service (75.74: 24.26), coverage of emergency medical service in target group (81.97%), time to response service (83.17%), appropriateness of first aid care (96.81%) and appropriateness of advance life support care (98.97%). However participation of local administration organization was lower than standard criteria (45.45%) which affected by lacking of supported resources and emphasize on importance of emergency medical service.
Conclusion: The assessment of emergency medical service in seven indicators found achieved in six indicators which involved medical care and systemic management. The unsatisfied indicator was participation of local administration organization affected by limited resources to support the service. Emphasizing on importance of emergency medical service and incorporate emergency medical service into local administration organization action plan will increase their participation role in emergency medical service.
