Factors Associated to Birth Asphyxia
Main Article Content
Abstract
Objective: To find incidence of birth asphyxia and determine the risk factors associated to Birth asphyxia in Surin Hospital.
Design: Analytical study.
Setting: Department of Obstetric and Gynecology Surin Hospital.
Subjects: A retrospective study of 5,508 mothers who delivered live infant from October 1, 2006 - September 30, 2007. Apgar score 7 at 1 minute meant Birth asphyxia
Result: Incidence of Birth asphyxia was 40.12 : 1,000 live births in Surin Hospital. Old age mother (16.7%, p = 0.004), inappropriate antenatal care (no ANC 5.6% p = 0.000) preterm birth (29.2%, p = 0.000) thick meconium (22.7%, p = 0.000) referring mothers from other hospital (35.6%, p = 0.000) male infant (58.8%, p = 0.024) large baby 4,000 grams and over (5.4%, p = 0.000) and cesarean section (66.5%, p = 0.000) were risk factors associated to Birth asphyxia.
Conclusion: Incidence of Birth asphyxia in Surin Hospital was 40.12 per 1,000 live births. Factors associated to Birth asphyxia were maternal age, inappropriate ANC, preterm birth, thick meconium, referring mothers, male infant, large baby and breech delivery.
