Abstract

Background: Post-tonsillectomy hemorrhage is the most common serious complication following the operation and sometimes life threatening.
Objective: To determine the incidence, risk factors, timing of onset, severity, intervention and result of post-tonsillectomy hemorrhage in monopolar cauterization technique in Sisaket Hospital.
Research design: Retrospective descriptive study.
Subject: Patients underwent tonsillectomy (500 cases totally) by same doctor with monopolar cauterization technique in Sisaket Hospital from October 10th 2001 to November 10th 2005.
Statistics: Descriptive statistics; data analysis presented by mean and ratio.
Results: from 500 cases of tonsillectomy performed during the past 5 years; post-tonsillectomy hemorrhage occurred in 25 cases (5%). From 25 of hemorrhagic cases, 2 cases (8%) were self-limited bleeding, 8 cases (32%) were treated by silver nitrate cauterization under local anesthesia and 15 cases (60%) were treated by electric cauterization under general anesthesia. Only lease had to receive blood transfusion and mortality was not found.
Conclusion: Monopolar cauterization for tonsillectomy was safe and posttonsillectomy hemorrhage was quite low. Therefore this technique is preferable in the general hospital.
Key words: post-tonsillectomy hemorrhage, electric cauterization.
