Preanesthetic Anxiety Assessment in Surin Hospital

Abstract

Background: In recent times preoperative anxiety is again discussed as an important influential factor for perioperative complications.The anesthesiologist may be important to identify and control the patients anxiety although his time while on premedication visit is rather limited.
Objective: To assess patients’ anxiety level and information requirement in the preoperative phase.
Setting: Department of Anesthesiology,Surin Hospital.
Research design: Randomized trial
Subjects: One hundred patients who underwent elective surgery in Surin Hospital, from December 1,2003 to January 31,2004.
Methods: During routine preoperative visit, 100 patients were asked to assess their anxiety and information requirement on a six-item questionnaire, the Amsterdam Preoperative Anxiety and Information Scale(APAIS) in Thai language.
Results: The prevalence of “anxiety cases” in our study was low. Moreover, results demonstrated that 1) women were more anxious than men ; 2) patients with a high information requirement also had a high level of anxiety ; 3) 55 % of patients in Surin Hospital who received preanesthetic visit did not have anxiety.
Conclusion: The APAIS can provide anesthesiologists with a valid, reliable, and easily applicable instrument for assessing preanesthetic anxiety. The most successful prevention of anxiety is preanesthetic visit with give an information to patients.
