Health Behavior and Health Status of Personnel in Lamplaimat Hospital, Burirum Province 2004.

Abstract

Background: In generally, Hospital personnel could be divided into 2 groups, one who directly contact to the patients and the other who work without directly contact, but they have opportunity to get both direct and indirect risk to be infected by germs and risk to cause accidents during operation all the time. For this reason, the researcher really interested in studying about the Health Status and the Health Behavior of the personnel in order to get basis information for using as the guideline to develop and improve the health policy for taking care of their personnel.
Objectives: 1) In order to study the Health Behavior of the personnel in Lamplaimat Hospital.
                       2) In order to study the Health Status of personnel in Lamplaimat Hospital.
Research Method: Survey Research
Subject: 231 personnel in Lamplaimat Hospital were included to the research. The range of time that used for collecting information were between August 2004 - September 2004.
Results: Personnel in Lamplaimat Hospital in the number of 213. Most of them are female 73.7%, have age less than 30 years old and the age of 30 - 39 years are equal at 33.8%, 62.4% are married, 31.5% work as nurses, 39.9% graduated with diploma degree. In Health Behavior aspect, the researcher found that 85% of the personnel were smoker, 44.1% consumed alcohol contain beverage, 45.5% had no exercise. The behavior of food consumption found that regularly consuming daily 1 time maximum as follows: vegetable 67.1%, vegetable oil 43.2%, fruits 36.2%. 91.5% had annually blood pressure checking, 69.0% brushed their teeth 2 times/day, 40.2% sleeping less than 6 hours/day, 1.9% had sexual risk behavior. In Health Status, the personnel in the number of 159 persons (74.6%) got their health checking and 93.2% of this group got chest x-ray. Diagnostic results, 8 persons (6.8%) were diagnosed as abnormality. Urinalysis and blood chemistry test, compared with the standard valve, divided into 3 groups showed that diagnostic results which had the maximum abnormality was the results of urinalysis (UA), Liver Function Test (LFT) and blood cholesterol that could be calculated to be 8.8%, 5.2% and 5.1% respectively. Physician’s diagnostic results reveal that 32,1% of the personnel had normal health status, 35.2% had slight abnormality and 32.7% had abnormality that should receive diagnosis and treatments, and in this group 7.5% had Urinary tract infection (UTI), 3.1% had Hypertension (HT) and 2.5% had Hypercholesterolemia that equal to suspected cases of Pulmonary Tuberculosis (TB).
Recommendation: From the study results, the organization should provide the responsible persons who directly and clearly taking care of the health of personnel in order to be able to proceed health promotion activities in personnel and seek offensive criterion to search for other types of infectious disease for providing the coverage to every personnel in order to prevent the spreading of disease and to urge the health promotion behavior of personnel, especially exercising and eating which is a significant factor to have Hypercholesterolemia, Diabetes Mellitus (DM) and Hypertension (HT) which found that the personnel of this hospital have been sick with.
