Denque virus infection in children in Surin Hospital 2003

Abstract

     A retrospective study of Dengue virus infection (Dengue fever and Dengue hemorrhagic fever) in children in Surin Hospital from 1 May 2003 to 31 August 2003 showed 597 cases. The ratio between male and female 1.08 : 1. Patient age less than 1 year was 14 cases (2.3%), median age was 5 months (range 2.5-10 mouths). Patient age 1-15 years was 583 cases (97.7%), common in age 6-10 years, median age was 9 years (83 cases). Manifestations in patient age less than 1 year were vomiting (64.2%), cough (42.8%), rhinitis (21.4%), diarrhea (57.1%), convulsion (21.4%), petechial rash (50.0%). Manifestations in patient age 1-15 years were headache (26.2%), nausea (15.9%), vomiting (59.8%), abdominal pain (39.5%), cough (24.6%), diarrhea (12.7%), convulsion (1.3%). In this study manifestations in patient age less than 1 year had less headache, nausea, abdominal pain and more cough, rhinitis, diarrhea, convulsion, petechial rash than patient age 1-15 years liked other study. Neurological manifestations were 13 cases (3 cases in patient age less than 1 year and 10 cases in patient age 1-15 years). Complications were fluid overload 1.2%, massive GI bleeding 1.2%, liver dysfunction 0.3%, hyponatremia 0.3%. No patient died in this study.
