The Self Care Behabior of Diabetic Mellitus Patients in Phutthaisong Hospital, Buriram Province 2005

Abstract
Study Background: Diabetes mellitus, A non-communicable disease and incurable, needs continous care for a long time. The patients may be develops the chronic complicatoins. Self care by diabetic patients is very important issue to control the disease and prevent complications. Healthcare worker has to be done, is the health promoting which will create the strength for the patients to fight with the severe disease without any complication and the continually promoting of health will assist the patients to return to their normal life.
Objectives: To examine the self care behavior of diabetic mellitus patients and relationship between the self care behavior and the related factors.
Research Method: Survey research
Sampling Group: Purposely selected from the diabetic mellitus patients who attended the Out Patient Department at Phutthaisong Hospital, Buriram Province, during September 1-30, 2005.
Research Results: Found that most of them are Female at 80.6%, 19.4% Male, most of them are under 60 years old 63.1%, follow by over 60 years old of age 36.9%. The average age is 58.25, the minimum is 32 years and the maximum is 82 years. Their marital status are couple 69.9%, follow by widowed/separated 25.2%, 98.1% is Buddhism. Educational background are primary education at 84.5%, follow by Secondary education/ Vocational Certificate and Bachelor degree or higher which account for the same number of 4.9% respectively. There are the occupations of Housewife, Head of the family or stay at home 68.0%, follow by 14% Agriculture. To be the people who earn monthly income less than 1,000 Baht/month 50.5%, follow by income earning between 1,001- 5,000 Baht/month at 37.9%. The group of people who have the length of the most received treatment are less than 5 years 55.3%, follow by the length of treatment between 5-10 years at 34.0% whom the most of them are every 3 months appointed patients for checking up at 43.7%, follow by every 2 months appointed patients for checking up at 42.7%, regularly checking up at 97.1%. The sources of receiving knowledge on the self care, the most of them are from nurses 90.3%, follow by doctors 89.3%. The patients who have the other associated diseases are at 95.1%. The most of the associated diseases are Hyperlipidemia, follow by Hypertension and Chronic Renal failure at 63.1%, 51.5%, 10.7% respectively. When classified the patients to be grouped by score indicated that the self care on nutrition aspect, there is a group of patients who has the score on self care at moderate level. The self care on health aspect, the patients have the score on self care at moderate level.
Summary: The research results which find relationship between personal factor and overall score on self care found that the patients who have different gender, age, educational background, occupation and the frequency of appointed check up, have no different as significant of statistic in the mean score on self care. For the person who has a different in income, has the different as significant of statistic on the mean score on self care.
